Fear may be felt in the heart as well as in the head, according to a study that has found a link between the cycles of a beating heart and the chance of someone feeling fear.
Tests on healthy volunteers found that they were more likely to feel a sense of fear at the moment when their hearts are contracting (收缩) and pumping blood around their bodies, compared with the point when the heartbeat is relaxed. Scientists say the results suggest that the heart is able to influence how the brain responds to a fearful event, depending on which point it is at in its regular cycle of contraction and relaxation (舒张).
Sarah Garfinkel at the Brighton and Sussex Medical School said: “Our study shows for the first time that the way in which we deal with fear is different depending on when we see fearful pictures in relation to our heart. “
The study tested 20 healthy volunteers on their reactions to fear as they were shown pictures of fearful faces. Dr. Garfinkel said, “The study showed that fearful faces are better noticed when the heart is pumping than when it is relaxed. Thus our hearts can also affect what we see and what we don’t see—and guide whether we see fear. “
To further understand this relationship, the scientists also used a brain scanner to show how the brain influences the way the heart changes a person’s feeling of fear. “We have found an important mechanism by which the heart and brain ‘speak’ to each other to change our feelings and reduce fear,” Dr. Garfinkel said.
“We hope that by increasing our understanding about how fear is dealt with and ways that it could be reduced, we may be able to develop more successful treatments for anxiety disorders, and also for those who may be suffering from serious stress disorder. “
47. What is the finding of the study?
A. Fear has something to do with one’s health.
B. One’s heart affects how he feels fear.
C. One’s fast heartbeats are likely to cause fear.
D. Fear is a result of one’s relaxed heartbeat.
48. The study was carried out by analyzing _______.
A. volunteers’ reactions to horrible pictures and data from their brain scans
B. different pictures shown to volunteers and their heart-brain communication
C. volunteers’ heartbeats when they saw terrible pictures
D. the time volunteers saw fearful pictures and their health conditions
49. What does the underlined word “mechanism” mean?
A. machine. B. order. C. treatment. D. system.
50. This study may help to _______.
A. explain the cycle of fear and anxiety
B. find the key to the heart-brain communication
C. treat anxiety and stress better
D. understand different fears in our hearts and heads
D
Chinese are very generous when it comes to educating their children. Not caring about the money, parents often send their children to the best schools or even abroad to England, the United States or Australia. They also want their children to take extra-course activities where they will either learn music or dance, or other classes that will give them a head start in life. The Chinese believe that the more expensive an education is, the better it is. So parents will spend an unreasonable amount of money on education. Even poor couples will buy a computer for their son or daughter.
However, what most parents fail to see is that the best early education they can give their children is usually very cheap.
Parents can see that their children’s skills are different, maybe good in some areas, but poor in others. Most parents fail to realize that today’s children are in need of self-respect and self-confidence.
The problem is that parents are only educating their children on how to take tests and how to study well, but parents are not teaching them the most important skills they need to be confident, happy and clever.
Parents can achieve this by teaching practical skills like cooking, sewing and doing other housework.
Teaching a child to cook will improve many of the skills that he will need later in life. Cooking requires patience and time. It is an enjoyable but difficult experience. A good cook always tries to improve his cooking, so he will learn to work hard and gradually finish his job successfully. His result, a well-cooked dinner, will give him much satisfaction and a lot of self-confidence.
Some old machines, such as a broken radio or TV set that you give your child to play with will make him curious and have interest. He will spend hours looking at them, trying to fix them; your child might become an engineer when he grows up. These activities are not only teaching a child to read a book, but rather to think, to use his mind. And that is more important.
51. What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A. Parents don’t often send their children to the best schools.
B. Parents care about their money when educating their children.
C. Parents spend much money on the education without thinking.
D. Parents seldom want their children to take extra-course activities.
52. Most Chinese parents don’t realize ________.
A. what children really need in later life
B. how much the best education is worth
C. why school tests don’t satisfy children
D. when children should be educated
53. The writer’s attitude to children’s education is that ________.
A. school education can’t meet parents’ expectations
B. children today should learn different skills
C. the cheaper an education is, the better it is
D. practical skills are helpful to children’s growth

Researchers have discovered that, in general, it only takes seven seconds for a person to start making judgments(判断) about you when they first meet you. That’s why you should follow these useful tips on how to create a good first impression(印象).
Decide what image you want to present
Before meeting someone, start thinking about the purpose of the meeting. Are you trying to impress them? For example, if you want to make new friends at a social event, you will want to appear friendly. And if you decide to run for class president, you will need to appear confident.
A smile goes a long way
Smiling is the most important thing you can do when meeting someone new. It shows that you’re friendly and makes people around you feel more comfortable. To have a winning smile, make sure your teeth are clean by brushing them every day.
Be careful about your body language
Before you begin speaking, you will be judged on your body language. Therefore, it’s important to show trust in yourself by standing up tall and putting your shoulders back.
Smell good
How you smell can influence people’s first impression of you. If you have a bad body smell, it will put people off. In short, aim to smell clean and avoid putting on a lot of scented products.
Dress to impress
What you wear matters. While you should look clean and tidy, it’s also important to dress properly, whether you’re going to a birthday party or a sports event. You should think about what your clothes say about you.

Does this ever happen to you? Someone introduces you to a friend, you hear his or her name, and then two minutes later, you forget it. Or you go to the same restaurant every day and the owner always says “Hello” to you, but you can never remember her name. If this happens, you are typical—actually most people have the problem remembering names.
Here are some common ways that can help people remember names.
·Write the name down (with a little information about the person) as soon as possible.
·Repeat the person’s name loud at least three times while you talk together. For example, instead of saying “Nice to meet you. ” say “Nice to meet you, Jack (or Sue or whatever the person’s name is). ” Instead of saying “Where do you live?” you can say “Where do you live, Jack?”
·Introduce the person by name to someone else right away.
There are also some strange ways. However, try them.
·Think of a story using the person’s name. For example, think to yourself, “Jack has a nice jacket. ” to imagine Jack in a nice jacket.
·Think of a rhyme for the person’s name. For example, think to yourself, “Jack would look nice in black. ” imagine Jack wearing black clothes.
All these ways have one thing in common. You must pay attention to the people you meet. You can’t just meet someone, nod your head, say hello, and walk away. Remembering names takes work and practice.
