I was born in La Alberca, a small village in Salamanca Province. I lived there with my parents until I was fourteen years old. I remember playing after school with my friends, who were my neighbors. We usually played in the main square, and it was the place where everybody met. After playing for about two hours, my sister and I always went home.

My sister is two years older than me and she always took care of me. We were very close friends and today we are still very close. When we arrived home, we had to do our homework, and after dinner we went to bed.

I liked our house which was in the main square. It had four floors, and my family always lived on the third floor. Even though the house was very big, my sister and I shared the same room. I loved to be with my sister in our room because we could talk about things and share our “secrets” there.

I especially (尤其) remember the summer when my aunt, who is from Asturias, came to visit us. She had two daughters, and they were the same age as my sister. The four of us spent most of our time together playing in the main square. In the daytime, when it was hot, we went to the swimming pool. Singing and music play an important part in our culture. You’ll find music in many parts of our lives: theater, television, movies, holidays, and celebrations. At home, music can become part of family cultures.

From birth, parents use music to comfort children and to express (表达) love and joy. So, how can music impact (影响) children?

The benefits (好处) of music

A 2016 study found that musical experiences (经历) in childhood can improve brain development (促进大脑发育), especially in language learning and reading skills. According to the NAMM Foundation, learning to play an instrument can improve math learning and even help students get higher SAT scores.

Also, music is good for all areas of child development and the skills they need to get ready for school. It helps the body and the mind work together. Music helps young children learn the sounds and meanings of words. Dancing to music helps children build sports skills.

What’s more, music brings us joy. Just think about listening to a good song in the car with the window down on a beautiful day — that’s joy.

Most young school-age children are interested in kids’ singalong songs with counting, spelling, or remembering. They also begin expressing their likes and dislikes for different kinds of music. They may express an interest in music learning, such as taking singing or instrument lessons.

Teens (青少年) may use musical experiences to make friends and to be different from parents and younger kids. They often want to go out and listen to music after school with a group of friends. Teens often have a strong interest in taking music lessons or playing in a band.

There is no downside to bringing children and music together through fun games. We are able to enjoy the benefits of music from the moment we’re born. A good piece of Mozart may not improve our brain, but it’s enjoyable and beautiful. From the fun of listening to music, to learning a new language and social skills, music certainly enriches the lives of children.

When listening, we can move our bodies to face the friend we are listening to, look him straight in the eye, and put down our phones! In this way, the friend who is talking can feel your respect and your support. Once you get to know their problems, you can directly give some advice.

It is always good to encourage a friend to get help. If they are not ready to follow your advice, the best thing to do is to share your concerns (担忧) with someone you trust, like a member of their family, another friend, or a teacher at school.

You might feel bad about going behind a friend’s back to talk about their problems, and you might worry that you’ll end a friendship. Try to remember that if your heart tells you that your friend needs help, this is not the time to keep secrets.
