This is why road trips were like mobile universities to us. We earned our PhDs(博士学位) in how to get along with other people just by traveling in that old car.

And if we were somehow given a second __40__ at life, we would do it all over again. Only this time, I’d put the suitcases in the car myself.

Tourism(旅游业) is one of the world’s largest industries. Many countries depend heavily on tourism as an important part of their economy(经济), while other countries–such as some of the smaller Caribbean island nations–are almost completely dependent on tourism.

Despite its economic advantages, tourism has disadvantages, too. While countries spend millions attracting tourists, they are also under the pressure(压力) that tourism brings.

One of the biggest problems is environmental. The building of roads and hotels can quickly destroy those very beautiful places. Development on wetlands, for example, influences wildlife; forests disappear as they are cleared to make way for buildings and to provide fuel(燃料). In addition, the tourist industry also puts a huge pressure on water people need. In dry Mediterranean areas, tourists use almost twice as much water as local people when swimming in the pool.

Tourism is also responsible for producing plenty of waste. Cruise ships in the Caribbean produce a lot of rubbish—more than 70, 000 tons each year. It even has an influence on places far away like the Himalayas, the world’s highest mountain, which has more than 100 tons of rubbish sitting on it.

In spite of these problems, tourism can be good for communities and the environment. The park-entrance fees(费用) are paid for the protection of places of interest or the animals. What’s more, tourism brings people closer to nature, and can give them a better understanding of the environment and the result of destroying it. This leads to pressure on local governments to protect these beautiful areas, and can result in the protection of endangered plants and animals. Also, it can provide people with more opportunities to find jobs in the tourist industry.

Although tourism has many advantages, it clearly has a bad influence as well. The challenge for local and national governments is to manage tourism so that communities can benefit economically, and yet at the same time, make sure that the tourist areas are kept for all to enjoy.

47. Paragraph 3 and Paragraph 4 mainly talk about the ________ of tourism.

A. survey B. development C. importance D. disadvantages

48. The writer shows the waste problem is serious by ___________.

A. listing facts B. telling stories C. asking questions D. comparing

49. According to Paragraph 5, which of the following are the advantages of tourism?

①The money from tourism is used to protect the environment.

②Tourism can help people better understand the local culture.

③People can get more chances to find jobs related to tourism.

④Humans and nature are becoming closer with the help of tourism.

A. ①②③ B. ①③④ C. ①②④ D. ②④

50. The writer advises the government to ________ at the end of the passage.

A. attract more tourists B. care about the economy

C. manage tourism well D. develop the tourist industry

D

I have a special place in my heart for libraries. I have for as long as I can remember. I was always an enthusiastic reader, sometimes reading up to three books a day as a child. Stories were like air to me and while other kids played ball or went to parties, I lived out adventures through the books I checked out from the library.

My first job was working at the Ukiah Library when I was 16 years old. It was a dream job and I did everything from shelving books to reading to the children for story time.

As I grew older and became a mother, the library took on a new place and an__added__meaning__in my life. I had several children and books were our main source (来源) of entertainment. It was a big deal for us to load up and go to the local library, where my kids could pick out books to read or books they wanted me to read to them.

I always read, using different voices, as though I were acting out the stories with my voice and they loved it! It was a special time to bond with my children and it filled them with the wonderment of books.

Now, I see my children taking their children to the library and I love that the excitement of going to the library lives on from generation to generation.

As a novelist, I’ve found a new relationship with libraries. I encourage readers to go to their local library when they can’t afford to purchase a book. I see libraries as a safe haven (避风港) for readers and writers, a bridge that helps put together a reader with a book. Libraries, in their own way, help fight book piracy (盗版行为) and I think all writers should support libraries in a significant way when they can. Encourage readers to use the library. Share library announcements on your social media. Frequent them and talk about them when you can.

51. What does the underlined phrase “an__added__meaning” in paragraph 3 mean?

A. Pleasure from working in the library.

B. Closer relationship developed with the readers.

C. Wonderment from acting out the stories.

D. Joy of reading passed on in the family.

52. What does the author call on other writers to do?

A. Hold book fairs. B. Support libraries.

C. Write for social media. D. Buy her novels.

53. Which can be the best title for the text?

A. My Love of the Library B. My Idea about Writing

C. Library: A Heaven for the Young D. Reading: A Source of Knowledge

八、阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题(共10分,每小题2分)

How many times have your parents told you that you must eat your green vegetables? We all know that green vegetables are healthy, but what about other foods of different colors? You don’t need to like all food, but it is good to have different colors in your diet(饮食), for example, red food such as strawberries and tomatoes, yellow food such as bananas and pears and orange food such as carrots and oranges. But what about blue food?

A few years ago, a food company added the color blue to its bags of sweets. Children like the color blue, so were the blue sweets popular? The food company was surprised to find that they were very unpopular. Children still preferred the sweets that were the usual colors of red, green, brown, yellow and orange.

How many blue meats or vegetables do you know? None? There are few natural blue foods —it isn’t a common natural food color. Some scientists say that as a result, our brain doesn’t recognize blue food as something healthy or safe to eat. This is perhaps why we don’t usually use blue food coloring for drinks, cakes and other food.

Some people say we eat with our eyes. The idea is that we need to like the looks of the food before we try it. I wanted to test this idea and so I asked some friends to have a very unusual lunch. My husband and I made some eggs on toast and put blue coloring in them. The result is nobody ate them. My guests refused to put the blue eggs in their mouths!

So will we ever see blue food on our plates? The answer seems to be “no”, at least in countries like the UK and the USA.

Summer vacation means long days, sleeping in or enjoying the summer sun. It is quite true for students to enjoy a rest after a long and difficult year. But more and more parents worry their children forgetting a lot of knowledge, so they send their children to summer schools. They believe summer schools can help children go over the knowledge that they have learned during the school year.

In summer schools, students may study in a more relaxing way and can come up with interesting topics for discussion with their teachers. Usually, the number of students in summer schools is small, so this gives them a good chance to connect with other students and teachers better. If a student has failed a lesson, summer schools may help him or her. Moreover, they are building their imagination and learning social skills.

A summer school can be a good chance for students who need it, but it can be difficult for students who need a rest. So parents should decide if a summer school is necessary for their children. (177)
