第一节 (共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

A
The spot of red was what first caught Randy Heiss’s attention on December 16,2018. He walked toward it and found a balloon attached to a piece of paper. “Dayami,” it read on one side, in a child’s writing. Heiss flipped the paper over. It was a numbered list in Spanish. His Spanish isn’t very good, but he could see it was a Christmas list.
He was charmed and wondered whether he could find the child. About 20 miles to the southwest, just across the border, was the city of Nogales, Mexico. Based on the prevailing wind, he was pretty sure that’s where it came from.
Back home, Heiss’s wife who is fluent in Spanish translated the list. Dayami, probably a girl, had asked for a doll, a dollhouse, clothes and art supplies.
Heiss then posted about his quest on Facebook, attaching photos, hoping someone might know the girl’s family.
A few days passed with no leads; Heiss worried that time was running out before Christmas. On December 19, he decided to send a private Facebook message to Radio XENY based in Nogales. The next morning, Heiss awoke to a message: The staff had located Dayami, who indeed lived in Nogales and would be willing to arrange a get-together at the radio station.
Heiss and his wife rushed to buy everything on Dayami’s list. Then they drove for 45 minutes, crossing the border into Nogales. They finally met the very excited girl. “Her eyes were wide open with wonder. Like, ‘Oh my gosh, this really did work!’ It was a beautiful experience,” Heiss said. “Quite healing for us.”
Heiss, 61, has lived in Bisbee, Arizona for more than three decades. Ten years ago, he and his wife lost their only child. They have no grandchildren. Now they split their time between Nogales and Bisbee.
“Being around children at Christmastime has been absent in our lives,” Heiss said. “It’s been kind of a gaping hole in our Christmas experience.” He has since reflected on what a miracle it was that he spotted the balloon at all, let alone that he was able to locate Dayami and her family.

A. He has lived alone for many years.
B. He is not good at learning languages.
C. He has built a close bond with Dayami.
D. He buys Dayami gifts every Christmas.
54. What does the story intend to tell us?
A. Giving is rewarding.
B. All for one, one for all.
C. Actions speak louder than words.
D. Treat others as you hope they will treat you.

The Million Ringgit Charity Duck Race: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Thirteen years ago, Eric Schechter and his friends were brainstorming to find new ways of raising money for local charities when they came up with the idea of rubber duck races. The event, crazy as it may sound, involves racing “cool” rubber ducks down a local waterway and having members of the community “adopt” the ducks for a chance to win valuable donated prizes, possibly even 1 million bucks.
La Tomatina: Bunol, Spain
The tomato battle is in honor of Saint Luis Beltran, the patron saint of Bunol. Residents and visitors take part in a tomato-throwing battle that decimates more than 88,000 pounds of tomatoes. This crazy event began with a serious aim as a symbolic protest against Franco. But the Tomatina is now celebrated as an amusing way to end the summer.
Mighty Mud Mania: Scottsdale, Arizona, USA
Children’s dreams really do come true in the City of Scottsdale. Children aged 1 to 13, get to participate in a mud race. During the running of the Mighty Mud Obstacle(泥坑) course, several mud pits strategically placed, provide wet and really dirty obstacles as kids compete for the fastest time in each heat. There are also mud puddle pools for the tiny tots, and a mini mud course for those six and younger. In addition, Mighty Mudway features water and mud games. There are techniques used to influence others. But researchers have found that the most successful ones gain their persuasive power from just a few simple human motivations. One of these is the desire to make effective decisions efficiently. This may not be surprising, but you can greatly increase your persuasive power by triggering (引发) it with small changes in your approach.
When making a choice we seek to achieve the best outcome-anything less can mean a waste of our time, effort, and resources. But in today’s crazy, information-overloaded world, we also need to balance the quality of our choices with the time it takes to make them. Using contrast to evaluate a choice rather than judging one option separately may help us persuade others that our option is the most effective one.
Businesses can use this to their advantage when persuading customers to make purchase decisions based on pricing. The Carluccio’s Restaurant Group has over 70 cafes across Europe and the Middle East. They serve a range of Italian foods. Displayed on each menu is a Vespa Primavera 50 (a motorcycle brand) that diners can order, in a color of their choosing, for $4,500. Compared to salads and sandwiches, of course, Carluccio’s doesn’t sell that many motorcycles. But it’s not included on the menu to sell: it’s included to make the target items (the salads and sandwiches) appear as more effective and efficient decisions for its customers.
Understanding contrast can be helpful in contexts beyond pricing decisions as well. If you are presenting a business plan for a new product to your board, first review the products you’ve decided not to pursue. This isn’t to mean that you should invent bad alternatives to your great idea so that your idea appears more impressive, but rather is meant to give your audience the benefit of comparisons that you’ve been able to consider.
Regardless of whether you want to persuade an individual or a whole group, understanding how to trigger this deeply seated motivation can give you the power to convince your audience that the choice you’re offering is the right one.
58. The most effective ways to persuade others are from ____________.
A. pricing evaluation B. human behaviors
C. business plan D. human motivations
59. A Vespa Primavera 50 is displayed on menu to ____________.
A. show a business plan B. sell more motorcycles
C. offer typical Italian food D. help customers order
60. How does the author develop the passage?
A. By following the importance. B. By comparison and contrast.
C. By giving examples. D. By doing experiments.
61. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. To Persuade Others, Give Them Options
B. To Do Successful Business, Use Approaches
C. Achieve the Best Outcome
D. Make the Right Decision
D
A rainforest is an area covered by tall trees with the total high rainfall spreading quite equally through the year and the temperature rarely dipping below 16℃. Rainforests have a great effect on the world environment because they can take in heat from the sun and adjust the climate. Without the forest cover, these areas would reflect more heat into the atmosphere, warming the rest of the world. Losing the rainforests may also influence wind and rainfall patterns, potentially causing certain natural disasters all over the world.
In the past hundred years, humans have begun destroying rainforests in search of three major resources: land for crops, wood for paper and other products, land for raising farm animals. This action affects the environment as a whole. For example, a lot of carbon dioxide in the air comes from burning the rainforests. People obviously have a need for the resources we gain from cutting trees but we will suffer much more than we will benefit.
There are two main reasons for this. Firstly, when people cut down trees, generally they can only use the land for a year or two. Secondly, cutting large sections of rainforests may provide a good supply of wood right now, but in the long run it actually reduces the world’s wood supply.
Rainforests are often called the world’s drug store. More than 25% of the medicines we use today come from plants in rainforests. However, fewer than 1% of rainforest plants have been examined for their medical value. It is extremely likely that our best chance to cure diseases lies somewhere in the world’s shrinking rainforests.
62. Rainforests can help to adjust the climate because they ________.
A. reflect more heat into the atmosphere
B. bring about high rainfall throughout the world
C. rarely cause the temperature to drop lower than 16℃
D. reduce the effect of heat from the sun on the earth
63. What does the word “this” underlined in the third paragraph refer to?
A. We will lose much more than we can gain.
B. Humans have begun destroying rainforest.
C. People have a strong desire for resources.
D. Much carbon dioxide comes from burning rainforests.
64. It can be inferred from the text that __________.
A. we can get enough resources without rainforests
B. there is great medicine potential in rainforests
C. we will grow fewer kinds of crops in the gained land
D. the level of annual rainfall affects wind patterns
65. What might be the best title for the text?
A. How to Save Rainforests
B. How to Protect Nature
C. Rainforests and the Environment
D. Rainforests and Medical Development
