When I was about 12 years old, my older brother, James, smuggled a BB gun into the house. Our parents had told us many times that we were not allowed to bring home guns or knives, even if they were just toys. Having any form of weaponry in our home was strictly forbidden.

James brought me to his room. He opened his closet door and took out a shoebox that was buried beneath a heap of clothes. The BB gun was inside. I was immediately enamored by the shiny barrel.

“Can I shoot it, Jamesie?” I asked, hopefully.

“No way,” James said, taking it from me and putting it back.

One day, when no one was home, I went into James’ closet and took it out. For some inexplicable reason—I have no idea what I was thinking—I went to the front window of the second floor in our row house. I cracked the window open. I pointed the gun outside and shot. I quickly shut the window and peeked outside.

In a matter of seconds, old Mr. Schlosberg came out of his grocery store. He looked back at his store window. He looked up the street. He looked down the street. Then he looked straight across to our house.

Thankfully, Jamesie made it home before Mother or Father.

As he stepped through the door, I could hear old Mr. Schlosberg call his name. “James, James,” he called. “Come here, son.”

After several minutes, James ran back across the street and into the living room. I had retreated into the kitchen. “Alma!” he screamed. “Get out here! You cracked Mr. Schlosberg’s window with my BB gun!”

“Oh, please, Jamesie,” I begged. “Don’t let him tell Mother. She will whip my bottom real good!” Jamesie sighed. He wiped my tears and went back across the street to Mr. Schlosberg’s. I don’t know what James said to that man, but there was never a mention of the incident again.

Years later, I found out Jamesie had used the money he got from his newspaper route to pay for Mr. Schlosberg’s cracked window. He only got one cent for every paper he delivered. He managed to pay back the debt just before he went off to fight in World War II.

Since that day, I have never touched a gun: a BB gun, a water gun, a real gun, or any other type.

44. Why was the gun hidden in the closet?

A. The gun was too expensive.

B. The family had only one gun.

C. The law didn’t allow anyone to have a gun.

D. The parents didn’t allow a gun to appear at home.

45. What did Alma expect from James after he shot Mr. Schlosberg’s window?

A. To deal with the problem. B. To talk with his parents.

C. To throw away the gun. D. To tell the truth.

46. Which of the following best describes James as a brother?

A. Responsible and strict. B. Brave and determined.

C. Responsible and caring. D. Naughty and determined.

47. The best title of the passage is _____________.

A. A Warmhearted Brother B. A BB Gun

C. A Cracked Window D. An Incident

C

Store shelves are filling up with so-called “green” products promising to benefit the environment. A recent argument shows that it can be as difficult for buyers to confirm such statement as for producers to defend them.

The argument concerns the GreenPlug Electricity Saver. The GreenPlug is supposed to prevent energy waste by electrical equipment whose constant-speed motors operate at less full load—as is especially true of older refrigerators. Research showed that such motors can be made to do the same work with less heat, noise, and power consumption just by lowering the voltage (电压) of the power supply.

John and Wyck Hay, started Green Technologies to apply that finding to home appliances (器具). In the USA, there are more than 140 million refrigerators in use, accounting for an average of 16% of the household electric bill.

Two years of research resulted in the GreenPlug. Connecting between wall socket and refrigerator, the equipment contains a minicomputer that gives a motor full power (120 volts on average) for start-up, then reduces the power to 106 volts.

Older refrigerators are the most overpowered and, thus, save the most energy with a GreenPlug. Refrigerators less than two years old are already energy-saving that a GreenPlug actually makes them waste electricity.

The higher the voltage, the larger the difference a GreenPlug makes. Higher power costs shorten the payback time. The population-weighted national average is 10 cents per kilowatt-hour. But some residents in Washington State pay 1.5 cents. Some in Alaska pay 41.6 cents.

Then come highly individual household differences like the number of children or refrigerator-opening age. All in all, the GreenPlug should save the average consumer $20 a year.

Although the GreenPlug lowered the voltage as it was designed to do, Consumer Reports, an influential magazine, questioned how quickly—if ever—electricity savings due to the plug would repay its cost. People would be better off buying a new, high-efficiency refrigerator, the magazine advised.

Consumer Reports also said that the GreenPlug didn’t give a promised 25% savings worth $50 a year. The savings on the oldest model was the best at 8.6%, worth $20 a year.

Green Technologies ordered tests of the GreenPlug on up to 2,800 refrigerators through next year. The company will not put that data in stores. Instead, potential buyers will call to learn how their model of refrigerator performed.

Meanwhile, there is little evidence of consumer dissatisfaction. Sales topped 45,000 units last month. The return rate is less than 0.2%.

48. The GreenPlug on store shelves are due mostly to _____________.

A. an increased concern about the environment

B. a demand for money-saving technology

C. the high cost of electrical power

D. the shortage of power supply

49. What do we know about the GreenPlug?

A. It is especially designed for old refrigerators.

B. It works well with all home appliances.

C. It can’t guarantee lower electric bills.

D. It doesn’t function with lower voltage.

50. In the GreenPlug argument, the magazine Consumer Reports _____________.

A. advocates for the GreenPlug

B. suggests Green Technologies never tell the truth

C. doubts the effect of the GreenPlug

D. informs the public of different opinions

51. We can infer from the passage that the author _____________.

A. feels optimistic about the future of GreenPlug

B. believes the GreenPlug has cheated customers

C. holds an objective attitude to the issue

D. encourages further investigation

D

The biggest criticism (批评) of social networking is that our young people are losing their offline friends to online friends. In fact there is a lot of research that shows these criticisms are generally unfounded. Research by Allen et al. found that people are not replacing offline friends with online companions but are using them to support their offline relationships. They also found that our online friendships actually allow us to have discussions with a much more diverse set of people than in the real world and improve our psychological happiness.

However, there is one part of social networking that is deeply worrying. We find ourselves in a hyper-connected world where people access social media day and night, excited to make announcements about the tiniest details of their lives. Research is starting to show that this culture is negatively affecting not our friendships but our character.

Professor Larry D. Rosen, in his book iDisorder, presents evidence that social networking is turning us into narcissists (自恋者). He says that young people who overuse social networking sites can become vain, aggressive, and show anti-social behavior in their offline lives. But perhaps an even more disturbing effect is that one of our most basic emotions seems to be disappearing—empathy (同理心). This is the emotion that bonds us together; it allows us to see the world from our friends’ points of view. Without it, we are far less able to connect and form meaningful adult relationships.

Sherry Turkle, a professor of social sciences at MIT, suggests that people are no longer comfortable being alone. This is something confirmed by a study where 200 university students were asked to go without social media for 24 hours. Many admitted an addiction to their online social network; most complained that they felt cut off from family and friends. But being alone is a time, Turkle argues, when we self-reflect and get in touch with who we really are. It is only when we do this that we can make meaningful friendship with others. She believes, as is the title of her 2011 book, that__we__are__simply__“Alone__Together.”

These potential changes in our characters are rather disturbing. If nothing is done, our young people could well be in trouble. Therefore, suggestions about ways to encourage our young people to avoid the problems of social networking should be made, so they can develop the kinds of friendships that are required to grow into well-adjusted and happy adults.

52. The underlined word “unfounded” in Paragraph 1 probably means _____________.

A. undoubted B. false

C. acceptable D. illegal

53. In this passage, the author mainly argues that _____________.

A. internet culture causes various problems

B. we are losing some most important emotions

C. online friendships do good to offline friendships

D. social networking affects young people’s personalities

54. By the underlined sentence in Paragraph 4, Turkle probably means _____________.

A. we rely on social network for connection

B. being alone is necessary for being together

C. being alone makes us know ourselves better

D. we hardly communicate while being together

55. From the passage, we can learn that _____________.

A. we are becoming unable to understand others well

B. young people will develop offline friendships

C. young people can’t go without social media

D. social media have more advantages

Making Peace with Your Parents

As a teen, you’re going through big changes physically and mentally. Your interests are expanding. __56__

Here is the challenge: Kids need to explore the world in new ways, and parents need to protect them from the dangers that are out in that world. These conflicts can easily set off fireworks in otherwise calm houses. Sometimes conflicts can’t be avoided. But by paying attention to the building blocks of successful relationships, you can work towards making home a happy and healthy place for you and your parents.

For instance, try to find a time to talk when your parents are not angry, tired, distracted, or hungry. A good time to talk is when you’re all relaxed. Timing is everything. If the conversation begins to turn into an argument, you’d better calmly and coolly ask to stop the conversation—for now. __57____ Listen to what your parents are saying, and repeat it back to them. __58____ It also gives them a chance to clear things up if you are not on the same page.

Respect is the building block of good communication. People who respect each other and care about each others’ feelings can disagree without things getting ugly.

__59____ How do you build trust? Trust comes by actually doing what you say you’re going to do. Some teens find that doing fun activities with their parents can improve their relationships. Sometimes we forget that parents are more than rule-makers—they’re interesting people who like to watch movies, and go shopping—just like their teenagers!

What do you do if you are trying your best, but your relationship with your parents continues to be rocky? __60____ You can find supportive adults, such as a teacher or a coach, who can lend an ear.

Remember you can only change your own behavior; your parents are the only ones who can change theirs.

A. This shows them that you’re listening.

B. You can pick it up again when everyone’s more relaxed.

C. And then you’ll be able to solve the problem by yourself.

D. Faced with the challenge, children don’t know what to do.

E. You are more likely to get along with your parents and have more independence if your parents believe in you.

F. And your desire to take control of your own life is growing.

G. You may consider seeking outside help.

第一节 阅读表达与小写作(共4小题;61—63题每题3分,第64题6分;满分15分)

On the first day of school our professor introduced a new classmate—a wrinkled little old lady—to us. Her name was Rose, and she was eighty-seven years old.

After class Rose and I walked to the Student Union Building and shared a chocolate milk-shake. She told me she always dreamed of having a college education and now she was getting one. We became instant friends. Every day for the following months, we would leave class together and talk nonstop. I was always attracted, listening to this “time__machine” as she shared her wisdom and experience with me.

Rose became famous and easily made friends wherever she went. She tended to be highly motivated, responsible, and deeply involved in class participation. In spare time she had someone hang out or go to bars with. She even participated in some form of athletic activity. She said that extra-curricular activities can form a vital part of her experience, creating unique chances for friendship and learning.

At the end of the term we invited Rose to speak at our football meal. A little embarrassed, she leaned into the microphone and simply said, “I’m sorry I’m so nervous.” As we laughed, she cleared her throat and began, “We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. If you’re nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year, you will turn twenty. If I’m eighty-seven years old and stay in bed for a year, I will turn eighty-eight. Anybody can grow older. It’s non-optional but that doesn’t take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow up by always finding the chance of change. In this way, the elderly don’t have regrets for what they did, but rather for things they did not do.”

At the year’s end Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those years ago. One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep. Over two thousand college students attended her funeral in honor of the wonderful woman who taught by example that it’s never too late to be all you can possibly be.
