Each October 15, over 200 million people around the world take part in Global Handwashing Day. Research shows that not enough people wash their hands with soap. Experts believe that this leads to the deaths of millions of people every year.
Myriam Sidibe says that soap is “the nicest invention in public health”. He knows that washing hands with soap can have a big influence on reducing flu(流感) and other diseases. It can also prevent babies from getting sick and keep children healthy.
However, washing hands with soap doesn’t appear as fast as you might think. This may happen in poorer countries, but it’s also because for many people, washing hands with soap is simply not part of their everyday work. This is what Global Handwashing Day tries to do.
In 2008, the first Global Handwashing Day began. Every year since then, the campaign(运动) has held many different events around the world. In 2014, Global Handwashing Day was used in the fight against Ebola(埃博拉病毒).
Today, local and national leaders continue to use the day to spread the message about the value of clean hands. The hope is that handwashing can become a necessary part of people’s lives and make a big difference to the health of millions around the world.

Have you ever wondered why birds sing? Maybe you thought that they were just happy. After all, you probably sing when you are happy.
Some scientists believe that birds do sing some of time just because they are happy. However, they sing most of the time for a very different reason. Their singing is a warning to other birds to stay out of their territory.
Do you know what a “territory” is? A territory is an area that an animal, usually the male (man, instead of woman), claims (声明) as its own. Only he and his family are welcome there. No other families of the same kind are welcome. Your yard and house are your territory where only your family and friends are welcome. If a stranger should enter your territory and frighten (恐吓) you, you might shout. Probably this would be enough to frighten him away.
If so, you have actually frightened the stranger away without having to fight him. A bird does the same thing. But he expects an outsider almost any time, especially at nesting (筑巢) season. So he is screaming all the time, whether he can see an outsider or not. This screaming is what we call a bird’s song, and it is usually enough to keep an outsider away.
Birds sing loudest in the spring when they are trying to attract (吸引) a mate and warn others not to enter the territory of theirs.
You can see that birds have a language all their own. Most of it has to do with attracting mates and setting up territories.
59. Some scientists believe that most of the time birds’ singing is ______.
A. expressing their happiness B. enjoying themselves
C. showing their anger D. warning away outsiders
60. The underlined word “territory” in the second paragraph refers to _____.
A. a house where families or friends are welcome
B. a place where a bird shouts at the top of its voice
C. an area which an animal or bird says it’s its
D. an area for which birds fight against each other
61. Birds keep on singing at nesting season because ______.
A. their singing helps frighten outsiders away
B. they want to invite more friends of his kind
C. they want to find if there are outsiders around
D. they are frightened in their nests in daytime
62. How does the writer explain birds’ singing?
A. By reporting experiment results.
B. By comparing birds with human beings.
C. By writing diaries of birds’ daily life.
D. By telling birds’ interesting stories.
D
Books vs. e-books: Choose the best way to read
When you are going to read, you may be faced with a tough decision: e-books or the traditional kind? Each one has its advantages and disadvantages, and the best choice depends on a number of factors(因素).
Different people may have different preferences in reading. For example, an e-reader, like Kindle, can carry a whole library wherever you go, which is great for travelers or people who always want a choice of different readings. However, some people do love the look, smell, and feel of the classical book held in the hand.
Here’s a look at some of the science to think over before you decide to buy a Kindle, or some new hardcovers.
Young, unwilling readers prefer e-readers
A 2014 study found that out of 143 10th grade students, most liked e-readers. Boys and those who did not care much for reading also shared a strong preference for e-readers. Some scientists said that an e-reader has more similarities with electronic devices(设备) that young people use all the time, like smartphones or iPads. That is maybe one of the reasons that teenagers like an e-book more than a paper one.
Reading on paper may improve memory
Some small studies found that reading on paper instead of an electronic screen is better for memory. When you read on paper you can sense with your fingers on pages. You can see the progress when pages on the left are growing, and on the right are reducing. Perhaps this somehow helps the reader with memorizing what they read.
Paper helps readers with sleep problems and poor eyesight
High levels of screen brightness from an electronic device can cause eye problems, especially when reading e-books at night, Also, artificial(人造的) light from e-readers may interfere__with__users’ ability to sleep, leading to health problems and tiredness the following day.
Love for books
Many book-lovers still prefer the traditional option and value the feeling of a regular paper book. Paper books are usually very well designed. They look and smell good, and they carry with them a more human touch. As a result, some readers prefer reading on paper, because traditional books give them a sense of ownership, instead of just using something.
63. What can we learn from Paragraph 2?
A. E-readers are convenient.
B. E-books are the best choice.
C. Classical books are popular.
D. Paper books look beautiful.
64. What does the underlined part “interfere__with” in paragraph 6 mean?
A. show B. hold C. hurt D. help
65. What is the writer’s purpose of writing this passage?
A. To tell people not to use traditional books.
B. To help people choose the best way to read.
C. To introduce e-books as a new technology.
D. To advise young people to buy paper books.
E
When you first step out into that big world, it can be a little worrying, but as time goes by and you get into the new environment, you very quickly begin to love it because every traveler learns certain lessons, lessons about themselves, about travel, and about the world.
You might have thought you’d have trouble with the language or that you’re terrible with directions, or that you’re shy around new people, or that you can’t deal with some problems, but once you throw yourself to the deep end and have to survive (生存) on your own in the world, you’ll come to know you’re far better at these things than you ever realize.
Every time I go camping or stay in a poor hotel or even eat street food, the feeling is the same on that first day: sick. I can’t get clean. There are people making noise in my room. This food is going to make me ill. But after about three days of anything — any level of discomfort — you just get used to it. And then it becomes fun.
Couldn’t find anywhere to have breakfast this morning? No worries. Stayed up all night drinking and now you have to catch a bus? It’ll all be fine. See the above — it’ll take about three days to get used to it.
First-time travelers are usually worried about safety, but after a while you realize that the world isn’t out to get you, and if you just take a few easy precautions (警觉), the probability is high that you’ll never get stolen while you travel. Although you still might, so don’t carry anything you can’t bear to lose.
Things go wrong when you travel — lots of things. The train is late, the money exchange place is closed, the hotel has lost your booking, and you can feel a pain in your stomach that means last night’s street food was a bad choice. But you have to be able to deal with these problems when you travel, or you’ll quickly go silly.
66. What makes travelers love their travel, according to the passage?
A. The lessons they learn. B. The time they spend.
C. The preparations they make. D. The environment they get into.
67. The second paragraph mainly tells us that ________.
A. traveling abroad causes a lot of problems
B. one must be brave to travel in the world
C. nothing can stop people from going abroad
D. we’re better than we realize when traveling
68. Which of the following is true, according to the passage?
A. We’d better not carry things because it’s likely to lose.
B. We can get used to a different life style in a short time.
C. First-time travelers will be safe if they are very careful.
D. All travelers will have trouble with the discomfort at first.
69. From the last paragraph, we can infer (推测) that ________.
A. traveling brings problems for us to deal with
B. traveling service is not as good as we imagine
C. we must be ready to face problems when traveling
D. we probably know more of ourselves while traveling

It’s always a love-hate thing with school uniforms. But when they’re on teddy bears, everyone loves them!
Just look at Beijing 101 Middle School. Having a bear in school uniform has become a popular trend (潮流) there.
“They’re so cute,” said Zhou Yuandi, 15, a tenth-grader who bought two bears in uniforms when she graduated from junior high. “They remind me of my junior high years. I’ll keep them as a lasting memory. “
The idea of such bears started in 2011 to celebrate the school’s birthday, said Liu Yaqi, 16, a member of the public relations department of the Student Union. The department is responsible (负责任的) for selling the bears.
There are six uniforms for each grade, from Junior 1 to Senior 3. The bears, either white or brown, are about 50cm high. They sell at 68 yuan each. Bigger bears are sold during the school’s birthday.
Liu said at the beginning of each semester, they’ll take students’ orders, check the number of bears and contact (联系) the producers to make them.
In two or three months, the bears and small-sized school uniforms will be sent to the school. Then the department members need to dress the bears in uniform and send them to customers.
“It takes 30 seconds to one minute to dress a bear. We sometimes keep doing that for one hour after school,” Liu said. “It’s boring, but we joke that we are practicing dressing our babies. “
Due to high cost, the bears barely (几乎不) make profit (利润). All the members don’t get paid.
“But it brings me happiness in serving students. That’s the most important,” said Li Cheng, 14, another member of the department.

Hello, everyone. I’m very happy to report about my group members’ last weekend activities.
Jenny spent a meaningful weekend with her family. On Saturday morning, she helped her mom clean the room and did some shopping. She was tired but happy. In the afternoon she went to the library. Then on Sunday morning, they went to the zoo together and saw a lot of animals. They spent most of the day watching the monkeys climbing around because both of them were crazy about monkeys.
Steve had a great time last weekend. His brother Nick came back from England last Sunday, so he made a big cake and held a welcome party for him. They hadn’t seen each other for months. They were so happy to meet each other again that they sang and danced together all day long.
Rick had a busy weekend. On Saturday, he helped his mother to prepare for his father’s 45th birthday. He cooked a delicious meal for his father. Without telling his mother, Rick also bought a new jacket for his father with his pocket money. This made his father very happy. Then on Sunday, he studied around the clock, preparing for the math test, which falls on Tuesday. Math is not easy for him, so he must study very hard. I hope he will do well in the test.
Thanks for listening!(230)
