A world—famous Canadian author, Margaret Atwood, has created the world’s first long—distance signing device (装置), the LongPen.

After many tiring book—signing tours from city to city, Atwood thought there must be a better way to do them. She hired some technical experts and started her own company in 2004. Together they designed the LongPen. Here’s how it works: The author writes a personal message and signature on a computer tablet (手写板) using a special pen. On the receiving end, in another city, a robotic arm fitted with a regular pen signs the book. The author and fan can talk with each other via webcams (网络摄像机) and computer screens.

Work on the LongPen began in Atwood’s basement (地下室). At first, they had no idea it would be as hard as it turned out to be. The device went through several versions, including one that actually had smoke coming out of it. The investing finally completed, test runs were made in Ottawa, and the LongPen was officially launched at the 2006 London Book Fair. From here, Atwood conducted two transatlantic (横渡大西洋的) book signings of her latest book for fans in Toronto and New York City.

The LongPen produces a unique signature each time because it copies the movement of the author in real time. It has several other potential applications. It could increase credit card security and allow people to sign contracts from another province. The video exchange between signer and receiver can be recorded on DVD for proof when legal documents are used.

“It’s really fun,” said the owner of a bookstore, who was present for one of the test runs. “Obviously you can’t shake hands with the author but there are chances for a connection that you don’t get from a regular book signing.”

The response to the invention has not been all favorable. Atwood has received criticism from authors who think she is trying to end book tours. But she said, “It will be possible to go to places that you never got sent to before because the publishers couldn’t afford it.”

( ) 27. Why did Atwood decide to invent the LongPen?

A. To set up her own company.

B. To win herself greater popularity.

C. To write her books in a new way.

D. To make book signings less tiring.

( ) 28. How does the LongPen work?

A. It copies the author’s signature and prints it on a book.

B. It signs a book while receiving the author’s signature.

C. The webcam sends the author’s signature to another city.

D. The fan uses it to copy the author’s signature himself.

( ) 29. What do we know about the invention of the LongPen?

A. It has been completed but not put into use.

B. The basement caught fire by accident.

C. Some versions failed before its test run.

D. The designers were well—prepared for the difficulty.

( ) 30. How could the LongPen be used in the future?

A. To draft legal documents.

B. To improve credit card security.

C. To keep a record of the author’s ideas.

D. To allow author and fan to exchange videos.

According to a new study, teens focus on rewards and have a hard time learning to avoid punishment or consider the consequences of alternative (可选择的) actions.

University College London researchers compared how teens and adults learn to make choices based on the available information. They tracked the way in which 18 volunteers aged 12—17 and 20 volunteers aged 18—32 completed tasks in which they had to choose between abstract (抽象的) symbols.

Each symbol was consistently associated with a fixed chance of a reward, punishment, or no outcome. As the trial progressed, participants learned which symbols were likely to lead to each outcome and adjusted their choices accordingly. Teens and adults were equally good at learning to choose symbols associated with reward, but teens were less good at avoiding symbols associated with punishment. Adults also performed significantly better when they were told what would have happened if they had chosen the other symbol after each choice, while teens did not appear to take this information into account.

“From this experimental lab study we can draw conclusions about learning during the teen years. We find that teens and adults learn in different ways, something that might be relevant to education,” said author Dr. Stefano Palminteri. “Unlike adults, teens are not so good at learning to adjust their choices to avoid punishment. This suggests that incentive (激励的) systems based on reward rather than punishment may be more effective for this age group. Additionally, we found that teens did not learn from being shown what would have happened if they made alternative choices.”

To interpret the results, the researcher developed computational models of learning and ran simulations (模拟) applying them to the results of the study. The first was a simple model, one that learned from rewards, and the second model added to this by also learning from the option that was not chosen. The third model was the most complete and took the full context into account, with equal weight given to punishment avoidance and reward seeking. For example, obtaining no outcome rather than losing a point is weighted equally to gaining a point rather than having no outcome.

Comparing the experimental data to the models, the team found that teens “behavior followed the sample reward—based model” while adults “behavior matched the complete, contextual model”. “Our study suggests that teens are more receptive to rewards than they are to punishments of equal value,” said senior author Dr. Sarah—Jayne Blakemore. “As a result, it may be useful for parents and teachers to frame things in more positive terms.”

( ) 31. The word “trial” in Paragraph 3 probably means “__________”

A. experiment B. competition C. course D. business

( ) 32. What do we know about the three computational models?

A. They reflected people’s strong desire for punishment avoidance.

B. They gave circumstances different degrees of consideration.

C. They paid equal attention to reward and punishment.

D. They shaped the behavior of people at different ages.

( ) 33. According to the writer, which of the following statements works best for teens?

A. “If you insist on doing things in this way, you will lose ten points.”

B. “If we had talked about this earlier, you wouldn’t have made the mistake.”

C. “If you hand in your assignment ahead of time, you will get an extra bonus.”

D. “If you want to approach a problem differently, you can talk to your parents.”

Bees Dying for a Phone Call?

It is reported that many beekeepers in Europe have lost between 50% and 70% of their bees. Jim Piper, a London beekeeper, was asked how the problem was affecting him. “My business has been destroyed by this,” he explained, “Twenty—nine of my forty hives (蜂巢) are now empty.”

Why are so many bees disappearing? Recently, some scientists think that mobile phones may cause the disappearance of bees! As we know, mobile phones are one of the most useful inventions of the last 50 years. It is true that not everything that is said about them is good. But does making a phone call kill bees? Those scientists think that the bees’ navigation (导航) systems are destroyed by the radiation (辐射) that’s given off by mobile phones. This is how mobile phones influence bees. Bees have a build—in system and this helps them find their way back to their hives. And thousands of bees have failed to find their way home. It is believed they are dying far from their hives.

The problem of bees dying was first noticed by beekeepers in America. And it is a lot more complicated than it seems at first. How would humans be influenced without bees? Well, most of the crops in many countries of the world are pollinated (授粉) by them. Without bees, the crops can’t continue to grow.

Bees are disappearing in very large numbers and we can’t manage without them. Einstein said that if all our bees disappeared, humans would only live for four more years! The situation needs to be studied and checked by the world’s best scientist. If the mobile phone theory is correct, we need to do something about it immediately—before it’s too late.
