How to look good in a photo?
What should you do if you want to have a nice photo taken? Whether it’s work or fun, the most important thing is lighting. If you get bad lighting, you will look bad, too. Know where the light is. You don’t want it below you or above you, you want it to shine directly at you.
The key thing is no shadow. If you are being photographed outside, do it in the morning, or wait till the 2 o’clock shadow has passed. Also don’t let pictures in the magazines stress you out – all the pictures are taken by great photographers. And all the faces have had pimples (丘疹,粉刺) taken out by computers.
Tip your head and learn what angles work with your face; everyone is different. So you have to learn what suits you. You can practice in Photo Booth for as long as it is your turn to learn what angles suit your face. Tip your neck to make it look longer and make eye contact with the camera. No one can look bad if they smile.
For long legs, point one leg into center of the frame and get the photographer to shoot looking up your body.
For just leg shots, lie upside down and raise legs in the air for the best angle. And your legs will look thinner and be in better shape.
Keep shoulders back.
Always have mouth slightly open, enough to put a penny between your lips, as this will make your lips look fuller.
Lower your eyes and then look up just as shutter (快门) is clicked for full eyes.
Delete any evidence of a less than perfect photogenic moment, everyone has off days.
31. If you want to look good in a photo, the light should be _____________.
A. below you B. above you
C. directly at you D. right behind you
32. According to the passage, we should consider all EXCEPT _____________.
A. light B. shadow
C. angles D. photographers
33. What advice does the author give on taking photos?
A. Raise legs on the wall. B. Look down.
C. Keep shoulders back. D. Put a penny between lips.

Dream in Heart
On the first day of school our professor introduced a new classmate—a wrinkled little old lady—to us. Her name was Rose, and she was eighty-seven years old.
After class Rose and I walked to the Student Union Building and shared a chocolate milk-shake. She told me she always dreamed of having a college education and now she was getting one. We became instant friends. Every day for the following months, we would leave class together and talk nonstop. I was always attracted, listening to this “time machine” as she shared her wisdom and experience with me.
Rose became famous and easily made friends wherever she went. She tended to be highly motivated, responsible, and deeply involved in class participation. In spare time she had someone hang out or go to bars with. She even participated in some form of athletic activity. She said that extra-curricular activities can form a vital part of her experience, creating unique chances for friendship and learning.
At the end of the term we invited Rose to speak at our football meal. A little embarrassed, she leaned into the microphone and simply said, “I’m sorry I’m so nervous.” As we laughed, she cleared her throat and began, “We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. If you’re nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year, you will turn twenty. If I’m eighty-seven years old and stay in bed for a year, I will turn eighty-eight. Anybody can grow older. It’s non-optional but that doesn’t take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow up by always finding the chance in change. In this way the elderly don’t have regrets for what they did, but rather for things they did not do.” Rose concluded her speech by courageously singing “The Rose”. She challenged us to study the words of the song and lived them out in daily lives.
At the year’s end Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those years ago. One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep. Over two thousand college students attended her funeral in honor of the wonderful woman who taught by example that it’s never too late to be all you can possibly be.
34. Why does the author compare Rose to “time machine” in Paragraph 2?
A. To stress her old age and knowledge of life.
B. To describe the close friendship between them.
C. To show that she always enjoyed her active life.
D. To explain why she took on a challenge in college.
35. Rose was invited to speak at the football meal most probably because _____________.
A. she was a great football fan
B. she was the smartest student
C. she tried hard to achieve her dream
D. she became more educated than the others
36. We can learn that Rose agreed with the idea that _____________.
A. growing older means growing UP
B. it takes talent and ability to grow up
C. receiving high education helps to be courageous
D. one grows older at the same time when he grows up
37. The passage is intended to _____________.
A. provide an example for the elderly
B. discuss how to grow up quickly
C. tell the importance of attending college
D. inspire the readers to live up to lives
C
This week at the British Science Festival, Prof Rory Wilson of Swansea University has been revealing (揭示) the secrets of the animal kingdom, including penguins’ diving habits and the emotional(情感的) states of elephants.
“The problem with animals is that we often want to know things about them that they don’t want to tell us or that aren’t easy to find out. The only way to do it is to put something on the animal that will accompany it,” Prof Wilson said. Addressing a crowd of journalists, Prof Wilson said his work was all made possible by a small electronic chip (芯片) his team developed specifically to monitor animals in their private hours.
This chip contains pressure, temperature and light sensors—offering an extraordinary view of an animal’s life. The chip, Prof Wilson explained, does exactly what our smartphones or fitness monitors do, continually tracking and recording the wearer’s position and movements. “This is a novel written by an animal. It’s very exciting to be the first person to open that novel.” This earlier chip was about five times larger than the current version, 27mm across and 4mm thick—and weighing 1.2g.
So far the group at Swansea has recorded the lives of more than 1,000 animals and 100 different species. Prof Wilson said the whole enterprise was a team effort. His group consists of academics, postdocs and students, who spend months searching through all the data collected by the chips.
Presenting results from a chip on a penguin in Argentina, he said the penguin was a personal favorite; he still analyzes these birds’ data himself. Looking at the huge screen in Prof Wilson’s lab, we could see the penguin’s individual steps. A change in movement and a drop in temperature indicate the exact moment of a dive into the water. The sensors within the chip are so accurate that they can easily detect behaviors that humans might not notice—even offering deep understanding into some animals’ emotional state.
Think of the way we humans walk. If someone is happy, this can be reflected in our physical behavior—it is often said that they “have a spring in their step”. To observe if this sort of phenomenon also occurs in animals, Prof Wilson’s team analyzed the walking movement of elephants in a zoo. They realized that an elephant walking towards something it liked would walk in a particular way. When that same elephant though was made to go away from the thing it liked, it would walk in a different manner. “How well you can predict the behavior of animals and protect them is dependent on how well you understand the rules by which they’re working.” Prof Wilson said.
38. According to Prof Wilson, what contributes most to his team’s discovery?
A. The cooperation of experts from different fields.
B. The use of a special electronic chip.
C. The personal interest in penguins.
D. The special way of data analysis.

C. distinguish different walking manners of elephants
D. provide information about the animals’ inner feelings
40. Monitoring animals’ behavior helps _____________.
A. set rules for them B. control their behavior
C. change their habits D. understand and protect them
41. Which is the best title of the passage?
A. Inspiring ‘Novels’ Written by a Group fromSwansea University
B. Pioneering ‘Diaries’ Uncover the Secret Lives of Animals
C. Penguins and Elephants Tracked for Emotional State
D. Scientists Made a Breakthrough in Animal Study

Dear Mom, Clear My Calendar
September is around the corner, and some of us are already complaining about summer’s end. But parents have a special reason to do so. The end of summer means the start of school. And these days, planning a young child’s schedule is a big challenge. The challenge is no longer finding activities to fill a child’s day; it is saying no to the hundreds of options available. Our mailbox is filled with brochures urging us to sign our kids up for classes from cooking to martial arts(武术).
Educators are themselves discouraged by the number of special classes that many children attend. In the name of “enrichment,” three-year-olds not only go to preschool in the morning but study French or gymnastics after lunch. One teacher tells of a four-year-old asking for help in the toilet before hurrying off to tennis. Another teacher says that children sometimes hold on to her at pickup time. What happened to unstructured time?
A generous explanation is that we enjoy giving children opportunities we never had. The truth however is that many parents have doubts about how much time they spend away from their families. And one way to reduce this guilt is to believe that time spent in these classes is somehow more beneficial to children than the time we know we should be giving them ourselves.
David Elkind, an expert on children, suggests that the 1960s gave birth to the belief that earlier is better. Parents hope that early music lessons, for example will build a child’s confidence. The truth, however, is that any time children are asked to do too much, too soon, they are at greater risk for feelings of failure.
A child’s time does not have to be planned to be meaningful. Remember the lazy days of summer? Some children sleep late and play with the kids across the street until it’s time to come home for dinner. However, with the majority of mothers working, fewer children enjoy that idle (空闲的) time now.
Come September, children across the country will finish a full day of kindergarten, only to attend an after-school program until 6 P.M., when a working mom or dad comes to take them home. That’s too much for a five-year old. Finances, of course, do limit some parents. But let’s be honest with ourselves-our own busy schedules, whatever they involve, are no excuse for burdening a young child’s.
42. The author holds that it’s a challenge to plan a schedule for a child mainly because _____________.
A. a child’s schedule is too complex
B. activities suitable for kids are limited
C. parents are stuck in numerous choices
D. children always say no to parents’ advice
43. What the two teachers say in Paragraph 2 implies that _____________.
A. children love to stay at school
B. they are popular with children
C. children dislike after-school classes
D. after-school classes are of poor quality
44. According to the author, what is the real reason for parents to send their children to after-school classes?
A. Parents want to make up for their own regrets.
B. After-school classes develop children’s potential.
C. Parents have doubt about their own ability to guide children.
D. After-school classes give parents an excuse for being absent.
45. Which of the following will the author probably agree with?
A. For children’s benefits, the earlier the better.
B. Idle time is something rare for children now.
C. Children’s spare time should be carefully designed.
D. Parents should be forgiven if they have a good reason.
