Kindergartens (幼儿园) may teach you very important things you need to know. Dan, a 5-year-old boy, saved his father’s life with the skills (技能) he learned.
The boy’s father became seriously ill on the way home from a father-son shopping. He couldn’t speak and could not move, but he tried hard to stop the car safely. At that time, Dan used his father’s phone to call his mother for help. The 5-year-old boy tried his best to give her useful information and he could to tell where they were. Just as he had learned in the Kindergarten, Dan read the letters he saw on a nearby store sign: “F, U, R, N, I, T, U, R, E.” But that wasn’t enough for his mother to find them. Then he said that they were near a bridge.
Finally, his mother understood he was talking about a store called Furniture 22 on New Jersey’s Route 22.
The mother called 911 and the father was saved in time. “He just thought his dad needed help,” Dan’s mother told the reporter.
She also pointed out that her husband was a hero, too. “It is surprising for him to get off the highway and get himself and his child to safety even when he was so sick,” she said.
Shine, head of the Kindergarten, felt proud of his pupil. “Dan’s spelling skills helped seize (抓住) the moment,” he said. “And that’s the real value of education (教育).”

When my son, Mark, was in the third grade, he saved all his pocket money for over three months to buy holiday presents. The third Saturday in December Mark said he had made his list and had twenty dollars in his pocket.
I drove him to a nearby supermarket. Mark picked up a hand basket and went in while I waited and watched in the car. It took Mark over 45 minutes to choose his presents. Finally he came to the checkout counter (交款处) and reached into his pocket for his money. It was not there! There was a hole in his pocket, but no money. Mark stood there holding his basket, tears falling down his face.
Then a surprising thing happened. A woman came up to Mark and took him in her arms. “You would help me a lot if you let me pay for you,” said the woman. “It would be the most wonderful gift you could give me. I only ask that one day you will pass it on. When you grow up, I would like you to find someone you can help. When you help others, I know you will feel as good about it as I do now.”
Mark took the money, dried his tears and ran back to the checkout counter as fast as he could. That year we all enjoyed our gifts almost as much as Mark enjoyed giving them to us.
I would like to say “thank you” to that very kind woman, and tell her that four years later, Mark went house to house collecting blankets (毯子) and clothes for the homeless people in the fire. And I want to promise her that Mark will never forget to keep passing it on.
48. When did the story probably happen?
A. Before Christmas Day. B. On Christmas Day.
C. On New Year’s Day. D. After New Year’s Day.
49. What happened to Mark in the supermarket?
A. His gifts were stolen. B. He broke his basket.
C. He lost his money. D. He lost his way.
50. Why did the writer want to say “thank you” to the woman?
A. Because she bought Mark a nice present.
B. Because she always paid money for others.
C. Because she collected clothes for the homeless.
D. Because she taught Mark to help people in need.
51. What’s the best title for this passage?
A. A big supermarket B. A kind woman
C. A wonderful gift D. A happy family
(D)
Some people say that today, reading is not as important as it was. These days we have photos, films, radio, and television. Why read a description(描述) of something when you can look at a photograph(图片)? Why read a novel when we can see a film? Why read a newspaper when the latest news is brought to us every hour on radio and TV?
Photographs can give a very clear idea of places and of people that we have never seen. An encyclopedia (百科全书), for example, is always better when it has good
illustrations. But we also need words to explain the photographs and drawings. A photograph of an elephant may give us a very good idea of what an elephant looks like, but it tells us nothing about the different kinds of elephants there are and where they are found, their exact size and weight, how they can be useful to man and so on.
In the same way a good film has action, movement, color, and maybe music. These are things we do not find on the printed page. But reading a novel has certain advantages over watching even an excellent film. Reading a novel requires (需要) imagination (想象力). Each of us imagines a story differently.
Watching news on television can certainly be exciting. But we need newspapers as well. Some important news stories happen when there are no cameras around. More importantly, a newspaper does not just report the news. It explains why something has been happening. It also contains (包括) interesting articles on different subjects. Newspapers are an important part of our lives, if we want to understand what is going on in the places we live as well as in other parts of the world.
Reading is very important for information and pleasure. We need to be good readers to enjoy a full life as human beings. Reading is a skill and like other skills, it needs practice. The more we read, the better readers we become. And the better readers we become, the more we enjoy reading! The secret is to get the reading habit. Read at least a little every day.
52. Which of the following is NOT TRUE according to the passage?
A. Photographs can provide some information but not enough.
B. Each of us imagines a novel or a story we read differently.
C. We spend more time reading newspapers than watching TV.
D. Reading is very important for information and pleasure.
53. What does the underlined word “illustrations” mean in Paragraph 2?
A. Pictures. B. Words. C. Covers. D. Signs.
54. What does the writer think about reading?
A. It is a wonderful invention.
B. It doesn’t need any practice at all.
C. It is more interesting than television.
D. It is an important part of our lives.
55. Which is the writer’s idea?
A. Reading is not so useful as it was.
B. People are encouraged to do some reading every day.
C. The writer prefers seeing a film to reading a book.
D. Reading is more important than listening or writing.

Do you like playing video games? Maybe you’d like to be a games tester (测试员). When video game companies make new games, they pay games testers to play the games and make sure they work. Does that sound like fun to you? Well, let’s hear what one games tester, Steve Conroy, has to say.
“We sit and look at a screen (屏幕) all day,” says Steve. “But it’s not like playing a game at home. We don’t play a game from start to finish. Our main job is to find problems with the games - we call them “bugs”. We usually test one small part of a game again and again. That can be boring!
Games testers can’t choose their games. “Sometimes I have to test a game that’s for young children,” says Steve. “Playing a children’s game all week isn’t fun. And sometimes we just have to check that the buttons (按钮) all work. That’s the most boring part of the job.
Steve says games testers don’t get a lot of money, and they work for long hours. “Sometimes we work late into the night. We drink a lot of coffee to stay awake!”
The job can be boring and the working hours are long while the pay is low. Many people only stay in the job for a few months. But for the game company, that’s not a problem. There are always lots of young people who want to be games testers. They think it will be all fun and games!
