JOINING A CHOIR

I’ve always loved singing, but singing hasn’t always loved me. I would open my mouth with a beautiful song in my head, fully expecting my voice to follow suit—only to get an awful tone(音调) in return.

Still, without a second thought, I continued to try to sing whenever possible. On car journeys, when my now twenty-something sons were small, they would make a great play (hands over their ears, shouting “No, Mum, stop!”) of going through punishment as I sang along to the radio.

Never in a hundred years would I have thought about joining a choir. And when I did finally become a member of my first choir 15 years ago, something fantastic happened to my life. From the first time I experienced my voice as something special but also comfortable, in harmony(和谐) with the other singers, I lost my heart to singing. It was like falling in love. And everyone in the choir had the same shining smiles and bright eyes—singing made them feel happy, too.

Although it is singing itself that makes me happy, it is also how choir works together. There is something magical about breathing together. The voice of everyone singing quietly together is powerful and excitingly mysterious(神秘的).

And there is the unexpected friendship from the activities we do as a choir: raising money for people in need and taking our singing sometimes to places where people are forgotten and sad.

I am now a member of six choirs and, if I can, sing every day of the week. I stand in front of several hundred people, and know that some, if not all, of the songs will sound not bad at all.

37. What did the writer’s sons think of her singing when they were small?

A. Terrible B. Comfortable B. Fantanstic D. Boring

38. When did the writer join her first choir?

A. A week ago B. Six years ago. C. Fifteen years ago. D. Twenty years ago.

39. What brings the writer the unexpected friendship?

A. Having car journey with her sons.

B. Helping others by singing in choirs.

C. Having shining smiles and bright eyes.

D. Singing in front of hundreds of people.

C

Comets(彗星) are parts of our solar system. Like the planets, they go around the sun.

But comets are not made of solid rock like planets. A comet is a ball of dust, stones, and ice. Many people call comets dirty snowballs.

The “snowball” may be only a few miles across. But when the sun heats the “snowball,” much of it is changed to gases. The gases spread out and form the comet’s head, which may be thousands of miles across.

A comet moves fast in its trip around the sun. But when we see it, the comet does not seem to move. That’s because it is so far away. The moon moves fast, but when you look at it, you can’t see any motion. That’s because the moon is far away.

So comets do not rush across the sky. You cannot see any motion. But if you look night after night, you can see that a comet changes position among the stars. If you watch the moon night after night, you’ll see that it also changes position.

Each year astronomers discover new comets. Some of them are seen only once. They make one trip around the sun and then go way out into space. The sun’s gravity (重力、引力) cannot hold them.

Other comets, like Halley, keep returning. They have been captured by the sun. Halley’s earliest visit was probably 3,000 years ago. It may keep returning for another 3,000 years.

But every time a comet goes around the sun, the comet loses part of itself. Gases and dust are pulled out of the comet. That’s why Halley is now dimmer than it used to be. Next time it visits us, in 2062, it may be even dimmer. Each visit it may get dimmer and dimmer, until it finally disappears.

40. What is this passage mostly about?

A. Facts about comets.

B. Comets and the sun.

C. Who discovered the first comet.

D. Why comets are like snowballs.

41. According to the passage, some comets have been “captured__by__the__sun.” What does the underlined phrase mean?

A. The comets are rushing into the sun.

B. The comets are stuck in the sun’s gravity.

C. The comets have been brightened by the sun.

D. The comets have been burned by the sun’s heat.

42. How does the author help the reader understand what a comet looks like?

A. By telling about a famous one.

B. By explaining how far away it is.

C. By describing how fast it moves.

D. By describing it as a dirty snowball.

D

The webs that spiders build to catch insects seem weak. However, the strength of spider thread is greater than steel. Webs can even stand up to very strong storms.

Now a team, headed by Markus Buehler, a scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has worked out why the spider web is so strong. It is not just the strength of the thread, but the clever design of the web. The key to a web’s success is its ability to keep its shape and strength even after some of the threads break, says Buehler. The scientists found the thread itself has the ability to become softer or firmer. So it can hold different types of heavy things and bear a localized damage (损坏). This localized damage can simply be repaired, rather than replaced, or even left alone if the web continues to work as before.

Buehler’s research is mostly theoretical (理论上的), based on computer modeling of material properties (特征) and how they respond to stresses. But in order to test the findings, he and his team literally went into the field. They tested actual spider webs by poking and pulling at them. In all cases, damage was limited to the immediate area they disturbed.

In tests, scientists also used three other strong materials made into the same webs. The spider thread was six times stronger than any other material. More surprisingly, when the scientists took away up to 10 percent of the threads from different places, the web didn’t become any weaker. Actually, it became up to 10 percent stronger.

The spider web’s clever design gives scientists many new ideas. The findings might be used not just for physical objects such as safer buildings, but also in the design of networked systems. For example, a computer experiencing a virus attack could be designed to shut down at once, before its problems get worse. “It’s a really good chance,” said Buehler. “It may give us some new ideas for engineering.”

43. Where does the strength of the web threads come from?

A. Their high stickiness.

B. Their high firmness.

C. Their clever design.

D. Their ability to change in quality.

44. Which word is closest in meaning to the word “disturb” in the 3rd paragraph?

A. Moving. B. Upsetting. C. Changing. D. Hitting.

45. How many different experiments did Buehler’s team do to test their findings?

A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four.

46. What can be the best title for the passage?

A. Spider Webs Are Stronger than Steel

B. Spider Webs Hold Valuable Secrets

C. What Strong Spider Webs Mean to Us

D. How Spider Webs Get Their Strength

六、阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。(共10分,每小题2分)

World Kindness Day is a celebration which takes place on 13 November each year. It was introduced in 1998 by the World Kindness Movement. It is celebrated in many countries, including Canada, Japan, Australia and some other countries. World Kindness Day is celebrated to highlight acts of kindness passing on the positive (正面的) power.

Why be kind? Few people would disagree with the idea that a kind action is good for the soul (灵魂). It is a win-win situation because it leads to a sense of well-being both for the receiver of this kind action, as well as for the person who does the action. As a simple example, let’s imagine you have a workmate who always does a very good job. How about taking a moment to mention this to them, just in conversation or perhaps by email? The effects of this will probably be quite clear: your workmate will be happy to receive some praise and, in addition, you will probably feel good about yourself for having spread a little joy.

Many organizations try to encourage people to be kind, wherever and whenever they can. Perhaps the strongest supporters of this idea are the Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) Foundation. The RAK website suggests some ways to show kindness. Generally, these fall into three categories. The first is interpersonal kindness. Some examples are giving old clothes to charity (慈善机构) or writing a good comment about a restaurant that you like. The second is environmental kindness, which could mean simply recycling or organizing a group event to clean a local park or beach. The third category is less obvious: personal kindness, which means treating yourself kindly. Some examples are taking a walk in nature or setting yourself an objective to complain less. The logic is that by being kind to yourself, you will surely be kinder to the world around you.

Most experts on kindness agree that it has a sort of ripple effect. This means that one kind action is more likely to lead to more and more. So don’t wait for kindness to find you today, go and start a new ripple!

Most people, when they travel to space, would like to stay in orbit (轨道) for a few days or more. That’s understandable if you’re paying $20,000 for your trip to orbit! So in order for tourism to reach its full potential (潜力) there’s going to be a need for orbital space hotels. What would a space hotel actually be like to visit? Hotels in orbit will offer the services you hope from a hotel — private rooms, meals, bars. But they’ll also offer two unique experiences: impressive views—of Earth and space—and the endless entertainment of living in zero gravity (重力)—including sports and other activities that make use of this.

There will be a great variety of hotels—from being quite simple in the early days to huge luxury structure at a later date. It’s actually surprising that as late as 1997, very few designs for space hotels were published. This is mainly because those who might be expected to design them haven’t expected launch costs to come down far enough to make them possible.

Lots of people who’ve been to space have described vividly what it’s like to live in zero gravity. There are obviously all sorts of possibilities for dancing, gymnastics (体操), and zero-G sports. Luckily, you don’t need to sleep much living in zero gravity, so you’ll have plenty of time for relaxing by hanging out in a bar with a window looking down at the turning Earth below.

Of course all good things have come to an end unfortunately. And so after a few days you’ll find yourself heading back, but you’ll be much better at exercising in zero gravity than you were when you arrived. You’ll be thinking how soon you can save up enough to get back up again—or maybe you should change jobs to get to work in an orbiting hotel.

63. When traveling in space, most people would like to stay in orbit for a few days because ______________.

A. it is expensive to travel in space

B. they would find the possible life in other star systems

C. they could enjoy the luxury of space hotels

64. Which of the following is a unique experience that space hotels will offer?

A. The gravitational pull.

B. The special views.

C. The relaxation in a bar.

D. The space walk.

65. Which of the following is not discussed in the passage?

A. When was the space traveling made possible?

B. What are the unique experiences that space hotels will offer?

C. Why were there not many published designs for space hotels?

D. How can the travelers enjoy themselves in space hotels?

66. This passage is mainly about ______________.

A. traveling in space

B. the ways of living in space hotels

C. zero gravity and space hotels

D. the description of space hotels
